The single biggest driver of whole-home audio quality is the wiring, and the cheapest time to wire a house is before the drywall goes up. For new construction we pull dedicated speaker-wire runs to every planned zone plus a Cat6A backhaul for control and streaming, all landing at a central amplifier rack. Wire it once, wire it right, and the system can grow for years without opening a wall. We're doing this constantly in the active new-build corridors on the west and north metro: Maple Grove's Rush Creek and Arbor Lakes builds, the Woodbury neighborhoods south of Bailey Road, and Eden Prairie new construction south of Pioneer Trail.
Sonos and the Streaming Question: Control4 and Savant Matrices
Sonos is excellent at app-first streaming, and it does not have to be an island. Sonos integrates with Control4 and Savant audio matrices, so a homeowner who loves the Sonos app can keep it while the whole house still runs from one unified control system. Streaming per zone covers Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and internet radio, assignable to any room independently, and unified control means one app or one keypad drives every zone. If you already run Control4, Savant, Crestron, or Lutron, distributed audio becomes one more thing that answers to the same app you use for lighting and climate. That's the smart home integration.
Retrofitting Multi-Room Audio Without Structured Wiring
Most Twin Cities homes were not built for whole-home audio, and that's a solvable problem. The 1970s ramblers near Hopkins, the older Deephaven and Woodland homes with 14/2 Romex, the 1980s Plymouth split-levels, and the 1990-to-2010 Eden Prairie homes wired coax-only: none of them have the speaker runs a matrix system needs. We fish dedicated speaker wire and Cat6A through finished walls, soffits, and closets, cut in-ceiling and in-wall speakers cleanly, and patch precisely, because a retrofit that looks like a retrofit is a failed retrofit. When Multi-Room Audio Is the Wrong Call for You
Honest answer: if all you want is good sound in one room, a single-zone stereo pair or one Sonos speaker is the right buy, and a whole-home matrix is money you don't need to spend yet. Multi-room audio earns its cost when you want music in four or more zones, indoor and out, on one control system. If you're not there yet, don't wire the whole house for it yet.
